Rye, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters. The 140-year-old cocktail that still shuts every room up when it lands on the table.

- 60 ml rye whiskey Rittenhouse Rye or Bulleit Rye
- 30 ml sweet red vermouth Carpano Antica Formula or Cocchi Storico
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 brandied cherry or strip of orange peel, to garnish
Chill a coupe in the freezer, or a rocks glass with ice and water.
Combine rye, vermouth and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass with plenty of ice.
Stir firmly for 25 to 30 seconds until the outside of the glass is frosty.
Strain into the chilled coupe, or over a big rock in a rocks glass.
Garnish with a brandied cherry, or express an orange peel over the drink and drop it in. Serve immediately.
