Food & Drinks is independently owned and editorially independent. What we recommend is what we actually buy, cook and pour. Here is exactly how that works.
Who owns us
Food & Drinks (foodanddrinks.com.au) is owned and operated by Boxa Network Pty Ltd, an Australian private company. No winery, distillery, brewery, food brand, or retailer has an ownership stake in the site. Our funding comes from advertising, affiliate revenue (declared where relevant), sponsored partnerships (labelled as such), and product sales we may run in future.
What we accept
Bottles for review. Wineries, distilleries and breweries sometimes send us bottles to taste. We accept them on the basis that we will honestly describe what the bottle is like. Receiving a bottle does not guarantee coverage and it does not guarantee a positive review. We regularly taste bottles we then don’t write about, and we occasionally write about bottles we paid for ourselves because the sample didn’t show up.
Restaurant meals. Occasionally a restaurant will invite us to dine. Any review that includes a restaurant meal we didn’t pay for in full will say so at the top of the article.
Kitchen and bar equipment. We sometimes accept equipment for long-term testing. We will disclose this on any page that reviews or recommends that equipment.
What we don’t accept
- Sponsored posts where the brand writes the content. We don’t run these, ever.
- Paid placements in recipe content. A recipe on the site recommending a specific bottle is our genuine recommendation, not a paid placement.
- Paid positive reviews. If someone asks us to guarantee a positive review in exchange for money or goods, we say no.
- Link insertion deals. We don’t sell text links in existing articles.
Affiliate links
Some links on the site may be affiliate links. When you click through and make a purchase via an affiliate link, we receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Where we use affiliates:
- Links to books and cookbooks (primarily Booktopia, Amazon Associates).
- Links to certain kitchen and bar equipment from specified retailers.
- Links to wine and spirit retailers where an affiliate program exists.
How we use affiliates:
- Affiliate status has no effect on editorial decisions. We recommend what we would recommend anyway. If a retailer doesn’t have an affiliate program, we still link to them when relevant.
- Any page containing affiliate links will carry a small notice indicating so, unless the affiliate context is obvious (e.g., a standalone “buy the book” button).
- Affiliate income is a minor contributor to site revenue, not a driver of editorial direction.
Sponsored content
We occasionally run paid partnerships with brands whose products we would use anyway. When we do:
- The article or post is clearly labelled “In partnership with” or “Sponsored by” at the top and again at the end.
- The content is still written by us. Brands do not ghostwrite articles for Food & Drinks.
- We keep final say over what goes in the article. If a brand wants to dictate the angle, we don’t run the post.
Advertising
We may run display advertising from time to time. All ads are clearly labelled. Ads are served by automated platforms (e.g., Google AdSense) and the specific ad a reader sees is not selected by us.
AI and automation
We use AI tools as writing and research assistants. Every article on the site is drafted, reviewed, and finalised by a human editor before publishing. We do not publish AI-generated text as if it were written from scratch by a human, and we do not publish AI-generated images as if they were photographs of a real dish. Where an image is illustrative rather than a photograph of the actual recipe, we note it.
Factual corrections
If we get something wrong, tell us. We’ll fix it, add a correction note at the bottom of the article, and appreciate you for the note. Email hello@foodanddrinks.com.au with “correction” in the subject.
Reader contributions and comments
Comments on articles are moderated. We approve, reject or edit comments at our discretion. Personal attacks, spam, off-topic promotion and legally problematic material will be removed. Everything else is welcome.
