Type Vodka | Producer The Absolut Company | Region Sweden > Ahus | ABV 40% | Volume 700 ml | Price (AUD) ~$55
House notes
Absolut is the vodka you pour when you don’t want the vodka to be the point. Clean, lightly grainy, slightly sweet from Swedish winter wheat, and a finish that disappears almost politely. It has spent the last forty years being the default cocktail bar pour for a reason: it gets out of the way. In an Espresso Martini the coffee and Mr Black are doing the work, and Absolut lets them. In a Cosmopolitan the Cointreau and citrus are the stars. In a Martini it is serviceable but not exceptional. Not a sipping bottle. Absolutely (sorry) the working bottle.
What it pairs with
Cocktail duty only. Espresso Martinis, Cosmos, Moscow Mules, Vodka Sodas, and anything where the vodka is a vehicle rather than a feature. Food pairings are almost beside the point; the bottle exists to carry flavour from other ingredients. If it must: smoked salmon blini, caviar, or any other situation where vodka is traditionally used to cut through fat and salt. Do not sip neat. Life is too short.
About the producer
Absolut has been made at the Ahus distillery in Sweden since 1879 but only became a global brand in 1979, when the iconic medicine-bottle silhouette and the “Absolut ___” ad campaign launched. Owned by Pernod Ricard since 2008.
