Jarritos Toronja (Grapefruit Soda)

Type Grapefruit Soda  |  Producer Novamex  |  Region Mexico > Guadalajara  |  ABV 0%  |  Volume 370 ml  |  Price (AUD) ~$3

House notes

Jarritos Toronja is the pink grapefruit soda that makes a Paloma taste like a Paloma rather than a grapefruit juice-and-tequila situation. Cane sugar, natural flavours, a noticeable pinkness, and a not-too-aggressive fizz that holds up when poured over a salt-rimmed glass with ice. Each 370 ml bottle covers roughly two drinks. You can find it in Mexican grocers, most bigger independent bottle shops, and increasingly in Coles and Woolies. Capi Grapefruit is the Australian equivalent if you can’t track down Jarritos. Both work. The Jarritos wins on price and swagger.

What it pairs with

Paloma, Paloma variations (mezcal, gin, or vodka bases), grapefruit highball, or a non-alcoholic glass with ice, lime, and salt for a drive-home Paloma impression. Food: Mexican everything. Tacos al pastor, carnitas tacos, fish tacos, ceviche, elote, chips and guac, pork belly with pineapple salsa. Anything with lime, chilli, and fat. Also extremely good with a grilled chicken sandwich if you are being honest about what you are doing.

About the producer

Jarritos was founded in 1950 in Guadalajara, Mexico, by Don Francisco Hill. The range now includes about 15 flavours, all in the same retro glass bottle. Toronja and Mandarina are the two most cocktail-relevant. The company is still family-owned.
