Miami Vice

Half Pina Colada, half Strawberry Daiquiri, swirled together.

Why you are pouring this tonight

The Miami Vice is half Pina Colada and half Strawberry Daiquiri, swirled together in a hurricane glass for the kind of two-tone aesthetic that 1980s bartenders thought was sophisticated. Tilt the glass when you pour the first half so the line lands clean. Pour the second half slowly to keep the boundary defined. Pineapple wedge on the rim. Done well it is a cocktail. Done badly it is a slushy.

The two-tone tilt is the whole game. Blend the strawberry daiquiri (white rum, eight strawberries, lime, simple syrup, ice) until smooth. Pour into one half of the hurricane glass, tilted so it fills only one side. Rinse the blender. Blend the pina colada (white rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice, ice). Slowly pour into the empty half of the glass. The two halves swirl naturally where they meet. Don’t stir. Pair with by-a-pool, with-chips-and-salsa, a Saturday afternoon that has nowhere to be.

What to pour it alongside

Solo, by a pool. Or with chips and salsa.

Notes

Tilting the glass while pouring the first half is the only way to get the clean line. Pour the second half slowly to keep the boundary defined.
