The Mexican Mule

Swap vodka for tequila and the Moscow Mule picks up agave warmth and a lime brightness.

Why you are pouring this tonight

The Mexican Mule is the Moscow Mule with tequila instead of vodka. The lime in the Mule was always Mexican-adjacent; swapping the spirit makes the connection explicit. Tequila, lime, cold ginger beer, copper mug, slap-mint sprig and lime wheel. The drink for a Sunday at six pm when the weather has decided to be summery.

Use a 100% agave blanco tequila (Patron Silver, Espolon, Casa Noble). The cheap mixto stuff with caramel colour is not a tequila, it is a mistake. Real ginger beer (Bundaberg or Fever-Tree), never the sweet supermarket ginger ale. Build over crushed ice in a copper mug, slap-mint sprig, lime wheel. Pair with carnitas tacos, ceviche, fresh fish from the grill, anything where you would squeeze a lime.

What changes from the Moscow Mule

Vodka out, blanco tequila in. Everything else stays.

What to pour it alongside

Al pastor tacos, carnitas, anything from the Mexican grill.
