Pina Colada’s bigger, boozier cousin from the British Virgin Islands.
Why you are pouring this tonight
The Painkiller is the official cocktail of the British Virgin Islands and what they pour at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke. Pusser’s Navy Rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, coconut cream, fresh nutmeg grated over the top. Tropical, creamy, named for the pain it relieves and the pain it eventually causes.
The rum has to be Pusser’s. The recipe is trademarked and the original specification calls for it. Pusser’s Blue Label is widely available in Australia. Coco Lopez for the coconut cream, real fresh-squeezed orange juice, and pineapple juice that has been pressed (Berri Pineapple Juice in the carton works at a pinch). Build over a tall hurricane glass full of crushed ice, dust freshly grated nutmeg over the top from a real nut. Pair with grilled prawns, jerk chicken, a hot afternoon, somebody else’s pool.
What changes from the Pina Colada
White rum out, dark rum in. Fresh orange juice added. Nutmeg grated on top instead of pineapple wedge.
What to pour it alongside
Jerk chicken, grilled prawns, ceviche. Or on a beach with absolutely no food at all.
