A bartender in Milan in 1972 grabbed the wrong bottle and poured prosecco instead of gin into a Negroni.
Why you are pouring this tonight
The Negroni Sbagliato is what happened in 1972 at Bar Basso in Milan when a bartender named Mirko Stocchetto reached for the gin and grabbed the prosecco by mistake. The drink stayed on the menu. Forty years later it has become its own thing. Equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth, prosecco. Lower-ABV than a Negroni, lighter, more brunch-friendly. The cocktail Emma D’Arcy made famous on a House of the Dragon press junket in 2022.
Use the driest prosecco you can find (Dal Zotto Pucino). Carpano Antica for the sweet vermouth, never the cheap stuff. Build directly in a rocks glass over a single big rock of clear ice: Campari first, sweet vermouth second, prosecco last. Stir gently once. Express an orange peel over the surface, drop the peel in. Pair with antipasto, prosciutto, the start of a Saturday lunch that wants to go three hours.
What changes from the Negroni
Gin out. Prosecco in. Everything else stays. Result: lighter, sparkling, slightly sweeter.
What to pour it alongside
Antipasti: prosciutto, bresaola, olives, focaccia. A whole Italian lunch in a glass.
