The Kentucky Mule

Bourbon in place of vodka.

Why you are pouring this tonight

The Kentucky Mule is the bourbon mule. Bourbon, lime, cold ginger beer, copper mug, slap-mint sprig. The combination of caramel-and-vanilla bourbon with the spice of the ginger beer is the kind of drink that makes you want to sit on a porch in a small town in Kentucky in summer, except you are at home in Australia and that is also fine.

Use Buffalo Trace or Wild Turkey 101 for the bourbon. Maker’s Mark works for a softer version. Real ginger beer (Bundaberg or Fever-Tree). Build over crushed ice in a copper mug, lime wedge and slap-mint sprig. Pair with smoked brisket, fried chicken, anything from a Texas grill.

What changes from the Moscow Mule

Vodka out, bourbon in. Add a few mint leaves.

What to pour it alongside

Brisket, pulled pork, cornbread. Southern barbecue territory.
