A short note on vodka cocktails

Vodka is the neutral base. That is its strength. A good vodka adds weight and structure to a drink without adding flavour that competes with the other ingredients. It is why the Espresso Martini works: the vodka supports the coffee without muddying it. Why the Bloody Mary relies on it: the savoury tomato and spice need a clean background. Absolut and Ketel One both do the job. A decent Australian vodka (66 Vodka, Four Pillars Pure) is another direction entirely.
